Nonviolent Sanctuary Training (Canberra)
May 21, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm UTC+10| $10 - $15
Want to know more about Christian nonviolent direct action (NVDA) in the tradition of Martin Luther King Jr.and how it applies to the Sanctuary campaign?
Since March 2014, people across Australia have been putting prayer and nonviolent love in action, doing ‘sit-ins’ inside their local politicians’ offices until they see a compassionate approach to asylum seekers.
Now with over 100 churches joining the national Sanctuary campaign – offering to shelter and protect the 267 people seeking asylum who face deportation back to Nauru or Manus Island – Love Makes A Way is offering this introductory training for this ongoing movement of Christians. This workshop will INTRODUCE you to Christian Nonviolence. It will TRAIN you in Nonviolent Direct Action and EQUIP you to take part in community solidarity action in support of Sanctuary.
This workshop will cover why people take nonviolent action, its power as an effective means of social change and as a way of life, explore our fears about taking action, explain what happens if you get arrested for civil disobedience (which is a subset of NVDA), showcase stories of ordinary faithful people acting powerfully against injustices, and give you a few chances to role play taking action
Note: We have a ‘cost should never be a barrier to participation’ policy. Please contact us (details below) if you would like to talk about discount options.
